Bridging the Gap by Going Local

Two years ago, the town of Tomahawk, Wis., faced a challenging time when the Veterans Memorial Bridge was removed and North 4th Street was under construction. The bridge and North 4th Street is the only direct transportation link between the north and south sides of Tomahawk. There was great concern whether some of our small business owners could survive the nine-month bridge construction project and an even longer street construction project. It was during this time that going local became important and all sectors pulled together to “Bridge the Gap” and bring awareness to the importance of shopping locally. Our businesses needed us to support them during this difficult time, and so did their employees.

Tomahawk Community Bank is a mutual financial entity located in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin. Supporting the people, businesses and organizations in the Tomahawk community has been a part of our philosophy for over 91 years. Supporting the locally minded mission, our bank decided to open the drive-up an hour earlier and stay open an hour later to accommodate the extra time needed. Meanwhile, the businesses came up with creative ways to keep consumers shopping locally. Our businesses made it through the construction, and we now have a beautiful new Veterans Memorial Bridge and North 4th Street corridor, but we remember what it took to get here, which makes the Go Local initiative all the more important to us. Our community depends on all of us to keep our economy strong, and Tomahawk is a destination for its residents and visitors alike.

One of the first ways we enacted Go Local in our community was whenever a vehicle or recreational purchase was made from one of our local dealers and financed from our bank, a donation was made to the Tomahawk STAR Foundation (a special “Go Local” rate is also available).  The STAR Foundation awards grants to numerous local organizations and events throughout the year.

Our bank also donated “Chamber Bucks” to the Tomahawk Chamber of Commerce and Tomahawk Main Street for their Totally Tomahawk community event (Chamber Bucks can be purchased at our local Chamber of Commerce and redeemed at any Chamber Member Business).  The executive directors of both entities surprised unsuspecting shoppers and diners with the prizes and personally thanked them for supporting our local businesses.

Go Local window decals are being distributed to all our business customers and future Go Local promotions will be announced soon.
